What Is an Excavator Ditching Bucket?

An excavator ditching bucket is a wide, shallow bucket with a smooth lip and no teeth. It moves material and leaves a clean, flat surface behind it. You may also hear it called a ditch bucket, a clean out bucket, a grading bucket, or a smooth bucket. Those are all names for the same bucket. The wide shape spreads the cut across more ground, so you shape a ditch, a slope, or a pad in fewer passes than you would with a narrow digging bucket.

Every ditching bucket on this page carries a bolt-on reversible cutting edge. When one side of the edge wears down, you unbolt it, turn it around, and keep working on the second side. That doubles the life of the edge before you buy a replacement.

How To Choose a Width

Start with the weight of your machine, not with the width you want. The table above groups every ditching bucket by the machine weight class it fits, so pick your row first and then choose a width inside that row.

A wider bucket covers more ground per pass and leaves a smoother finish, but it also asks more of the machine and fills more slowly in heavy ground. If most of your work is grading and clean up in normal soil, take the wider option. If you work in tight spots, or you move wet clay and heavy fill, drop down one size so the machine keeps its breakout force.

There's no difference. They're the same bucket under two names.

Do ditching buckets have teeth?

No. A ditching bucket has a smooth lip with a bolt-on cutting edge. That's what lets it leave a flat, clean finish. If you need to dig hard ground, look at our buckets with teeth instead.

What happens when the cutting edge wears out?

The edge is reversible. Unbolt it, flip it end for end, and bolt it back on to run the fresh side. Once both sides are worn, you bolt on a new edge and keep the bucket.
